Shanghai Metro: FAQs for Foreign Tourists (2025)

04/25/2025
Q1: My foreign credit card doesn't work at ticket machines. What should I do?

Since April 15, 2024, all Shanghai Metro service centers have been equipped with POS machines that support international cards including Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, Diners Club, and JCB. You can use these cards to buy metro tickets at the service counters.

Alternatively, you can download the "Metro Daduhui" app, register, and link your foreign bank card to enter/exit the metro using QR code scanning—fast and convenient.

Q2: Google Maps shows incorrect metro exit info. How can I avoid getting lost?
  • Install the “MetroMan China” app and enable the “AR Exit Finder” feature.
  • Watch for the yellow exit number markings on the ground.
  • Remember the letter-to-direction rule: A = East, B = South, C = West, D = North.
Q3: I don’t understand Chinese. How can I change metro lines smoothly?
  • 🟢 Green arrow: same-platform transfer.
  • 🟡 Yellow sign: about 3-minute walk to transfer.
  • 🔴 Red exclamation: complex transfer, seek staff assistance if possible.
Q4: I can’t find English-speaking staff. How do I get help?
  1. Scan the QR code on pink pillars inside the station for auto translation service.
  2. Call 12345 and press 9 for English service.
  3. Show this phrase to nearby passengers: “请帮我找到地铁工作人员” (Please help me find metro staff).

Tip: Stations near hotels (e.g., East Nanjing Road) usually have better English service.

Q5: Why is the metro so crowded during rush hour?
  • Morning rush is 7:30–9:30 AM. Avoid Lines 1, 2, and 8 if possible.
  • Purple seats are reserved for the elderly—even if empty, try not to take them.
  • Face the train doors while standing to avoid bumping into others.
Q6: Can I secretly drink water on the metro?

Eating and drinking are prohibited on the metro. Violators may be fined.

Drinking water is only allowed at Hongqiao Airport Station.

Bring candy (e.g., from Lawson convenience stores) to ease thirst.

Q7: I bought the wrong metro ticket. Can I get a refund?
  1. Keep the original ticket.
  2. Go to the pink service counter.
  3. Say “退票” (tuì piào) and show your passport.

Refund hours: 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM daily.

Q8: I urgently need a restroom while riding. What should I do?
  • Lines 1 and 2: Public restrooms every 4 stations.
  • Other lines: Usually every 6 stations.
  • Clean restroom recommendation: Exit 9 of Xujiahui Station—spacious and well-maintained.

Tip: Download “ExploreShanghai” or “Metro Daduhui” app to check real-time toilet info.
